Cruise Ship Salaries: A Comprehensive Analysis

cruise salary

Honestly, being a captain on a cruise ship seems like a high-paying and prestigious job. According to the table below, the average salary for a cruise ship captain is $98,000. However, this varies depending on the size of the ship and the captain’s experience.

Cruise Ship Salaries: A Comprehensive Analysis

Before diving into the world of cruise ship salaries, we recommend creating a profile on Liveseas to discover exciting career opportunities and stay ahead in the ever-growing cruise industry. Living quarters vary depending on one’s job, but most crew members share small cabins with limited privacy. Work-life balance is a challenge due to long hours and being away from home for months. In addition, cruise lines may offer discounts on cruises for family members of employees, which is a great way to enjoy the perks of working on a cruise ship while also spending quality time with loved ones.

Engine Crew

One of the 74 recommendations of the Healthy Sail Panel is "Crew should be placed in single-occupancy crew cabins whenever possible to minimize extended periods of close contact with other crew members." Officers, higher ranking crew members, and temporary crew may earn themselves a larger room, or even the opportunity to not share a cabin with someone else. Crew members work very hard onboard, and their schedule is different than the 9-to-5 schedule many Americans think of when it comes to a work day. Any crew member that is caught engaging in any kind of a personal relationship with a guest can be terminated immediately. Just like everything, people will search the internet for answers to these questions, and I have assembled the top questions about crew members on a cruise that people are searching for on the internet.

A former bartender for Royal Caribbean who made between $1,600 and $1,800 a month said the pay was better than what he had made in Chile, his home country.

Passengers have to make their way to the lounge, which isn't next to the theater. The benefits don’t end there — your little girls and boys eat free in most onboard specialty restaurants and get a free evening of Night Owls babysitting service, so you can enjoy a little alone time. It's so common for JavaBlue to be backed up throughout the day that an easy-to-miss sign directs passengers to other locations where they can grab a cup of coffee. Meanwhile, lines at the onboard deli and pizzeria counters frequently snake so far down Deck 8 that they block the entrance to seafood restaurant Rudi's Seagrill.

The whole family will also enjoy exclusive access to the nearby Family Harbor Lounge, plus more great perks around the ship. We designed Carnival Vista balcony staterooms for maximum sea breeze and the most stunning views, and this stateroom features a balcony that's even wider than our standard balcony.

Back inside, Deck 6's Piano Bar is where passengers can order a tipple while an onboard pianist tickles the ivories. Make your way up a deck, and you'll find the Limelight Lounge, which serves as a secondary performance space and trivia outpost. Fully accessible rooms are stair-free, flat-threshold cabins, which offer wider (32-inch) doorways, turning space and bathrooms equipped with grab bars and shower seats.

Carnival's oldest ships carry between 2,100 and 3,000 passengers, while its newest can accommodate more than 5,000 people. The elderly vessel now looks shiny and nearly new with an adults-only sun deck, a water park, a comedy club and several bars, lounges and restaurants, as well as a spa. Dr. Seuss characters also make appearances as part of Carnival's Seuss at Sea programming. These two new ships are scheduled to debut in 2027 and 2028 and will be powered by LNG.

Carnival has made things a little confusing for Cruise Addicts by completely renaming and refurbishing some of its older vessels. If that wasn’t confusing enough, they have recently moved and renamed several ships from the Costa brand to Carnival Cruise Line. Carnival also has plans to move more Costa ships to Carnival in the future. When it debuted more than 20 years ago, Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, was named its godmother.

Insider's Guide to Norwegian Escape Entertainment

Then, The Haven restaurant is also complimentary, but that complimentary access is only open to Haven guests staying in suites. Oceanview staterooms carry the same dĆ©cor theme, but offer even more space, as a higher category stateroom. The ocean view is going to be behind you whenever you’re in bed, as the rectangular window type means windows are situated on the walls directly behind the bed. In comparison, Norwegian Breakaway measures in at 145,655 GT. When it launched, Norwegian Escape was the largest Norwegian Cruise Line ship (now, that honor goes to Norwegian Encore). Norwegian Escape currently sits within the top 35 world’s largest cruise ships.

Continuing toward the middle of the ship, there is the 5 O’ Clock Somewhere Bar, followed by the Tobacco Road Bar, and the Cigar Lounge. 5 O’ Clock Somewhere also has outdoor seating and an outdoor bar where you can order tasty margaritas and boat drinks. Not part of the meal plan, this fusion restaurant serves a wide selection of tapas. We dined here on the last night of our cruise, and it was some of the best food we had. Our Norwegian Escape Photo Tour of deck 16 would not be complete without the Garden Cafe.

The Haven on the Norwegian Escape Cruise Ship

The opening act featured acrobatic Parkour performers (helped by hidden trampolines built into the stage). Then Froggy ("Elvis Duran Morning Show”) introduced various performers and VIP guests, among which was Carlos Gimenez (Miami-Dade County's Mayor). Pierside at PortMiami, the rapper Pitbull performed a live concert with some of his best hits, including “Don’t Stop the Party”, “Fireball”, "Give Me Everything”. Followed DJ-led sing-alongs.

Our gift shops onboard carry everything you’ll need for fun in the sun. Shop from a variety of souvenirs, cosmetics, clothing, snacks and sundry items. Think of it as your travel companion, helping you experience an unforgettable cruise vacation every step of the way. If you happen not to find what you’re looking for, you can even post a question of your own. These stylish staterooms feature fine appointments, which are highlighted by nice touches and clear views of the ocean. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open to your own private balcony.

There was also a three piece band and a singing duo which could be found at different times in either the Skyline Bar, 5 O’clock Somewhere, or the Atrium. Again, check the daily schedules for exact times and locations as they do change throughout the week. On our cruise, Headliner’s acted as the comedy club on Night 1, Night 3, and Night 6. On these nights, the two resident comedians would switch off with one comedian doing a 7pm and 11pm (adult) show and the other comedian doing one show at 9pm. Unfortunately, when pre-reserving the comedy shows at home, there is no way of knowing which comedian will be doing which set. We used daily schedules found online to guesstimate which comedian would be doing which shows to attempt to book a viewing of each one and got lucky.

During the day, this adult only area offers some great sun, a bar, and the grotto, a unique water feature that lets you cool off without having to hop in the pool. Norwegian Cruise Line launched its largest cruise ship, the 4,268-passenger Norwegian Escape in October 2015. This 164,00 ton, 20-deck cruise ship is filled with fun activities, entertainment, and dining and drinking establishments. It's a great ship for families and younger cruisers, although active seniors should enjoy it, too.

Coined “The Tomorrowland of the seas,” Shipsomnia is a five day roundtrip cruise from Singapore to Phuket, with a stopover in Langkawi. The Groove Cruise is the only music cruise that sails yearly from both coasts of the United States. If you think The Groove Cruise Miami and The Groove Cruise L.A. “The world-famous electronic fiesta, Ultra Music Festival, will grace Split with its presence once again from 12 – 14 July 2024!

Beaches and Islands

Plus, the massive beach area was open all day, which allowed for lounging by the ocean and swimming under the sun. Traditional beach activities like volleyball and tug of war were also a fun way to spend the day if you wanted. Pulled out of the Port of Long Beach in Sept. 2013, it became the first ever, fully chartered dance music cruise in West Coast history. Since then, GCLA has become a staple within the West Coast festival circuit. The Groove Cruise is always trying to one up itself from the year before, which is why the 2016 cruise opted to go to Jamaica for the first time. Jump aboard EDSea, a 4-night Caribbean cruise departing from Miami, where your favorite artists will keep the party going all night long on the Norwegian Joy.

This Georgia Town Is the Cherry Blossom Capital of the World. Here’s How to Best Experience It.

EDM cruises attract fans from all over the world who share a passion for electronic dance music. Attendees range in age from 18 to 50+ and come from all walks of life. Many attendees are die-hard fans who travel long distances just to be part of this unique experience.

Experience a Non-Stop EDM, Hip-Hop & R&B Music Dance Cruise

edm cruise

Note that the 2020 Holy Ship music festival took place on land, at an all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic, instead of onboard a cruise ship. Early rumors are that the 2021 event will also be at a resort rather than at sea. Another advantage of attending an EDM cruise is that it allows you to see multiple artists in one place. Unlike traditional festivals where you have to choose which stage to attend, on an EDM cruise, you can catch all the performances as they take place on board the ship. During the day, Norwegian Cruise Line hosted a massive pool party on Harvest Caye, their private island in Belize, which featured a long list of special guest performers catering the day’s soundtrack. But, if you wanted a break from the music, there were plenty of other activities to indulge in, including zip lining and jet skiing.

When you're not tearing up the dance floor, relish in the delights of 15 decks offering specialty dining, bars, and lounges, spa and slide pools, interactive activities, and a whole lot more. The Theater was a great place to spend the late nights, because the lineup was always fantastic, and there was ample room to sit down after a long day. Thankfully, there was also plenty of room to dance, if your legs could handle it. This stage felt like the most traditional concert experience. This was the mainstage, located on the main pool deck and featuring the festival’s largest headliners, including Dog Blood (Skrillex and Boys Noize) — their first live appearance since 2019 — and Chris Lake.

Featuring the grandest production of the weekend, the Friendzone stage sported massive LED displays and a fantastic sound system more than capable of handling the extreme lows of FriendShip’s bass-heavy lineup. Additionally, one of the pools was covered with turf to expand the dancefloor, and a hot tub was converted to house the live sound engineers and visual teams. Several times throughout The FriendShip’s five-day voyage, I ran into headliners in the elevator, at restaurants, and in the hallways. In every instance, they seemed more like friends than performers.

Thank You 2023 Shipfam!

The hierarchical energy that often accompanies the fan-artist relationship is completely broken down when you see your favorite artist dancing with two left feet on the top deck just like everyone else. Rarely did I see an artist get hassled for a picture or autograph, but I did see several artists turning long-time fans into new friends. Organized by The Livescape Group, It’s The Ship offers a unique blend of vacation and music festival in a 5-star luxury environment with performances by international and regional headlining acts. Last year’s lineup included, Kaskade, Showtek, Adventure Club, Carnage, Will Sparks, Ferry Corsten, Headhunterz, plus more. I’ve written tons of articles just like this one that discuss the best music festivals, concerts, events, and parties all over the globe. Check out a few of these below and start planning your next trip.

A unique aspect of Shipsomnia is that some of the proceeds from each ticket are donated to a non-profit organization supporting ocean conservation and preservation projects. The private “Save Our Seas” beach festival also intends to raise awareness on environmental issues surrounding our oceans today. On the beach, feel free to grab a sun lounger and get a foot massage, go snorkeling in the crystal clear waters or just sit back and enjoy life while listening to an amazing DJ lineup.

We pass a table where Craze, A-Trak and other notable DJs sit, also enjoying a normal moment. We sit by a window looking out on an open deck, and outside, wild and crazy Shippers run around in theme-ready prom attire and dazed expressions. We are all about the Ed Banger French electro, so we hurriedly slap on some sun screen, squeeze into our bikinis and rush past the line (thank you, press pass) for the tender boats.

Destructo’s performance was proof that dance music can indeed be a spiritual experience, given the right environment, and the right people. Those looking for R&R can spend the day being pampered at the Spa and Salon or kicking back in their own private hot tub and balcony before getting back out on the dancefloor. Don’t miss Asia’s version of The Groove Cruise and mark your calendars for November. Join the wait list and be the first to purchase tickets to Asia’s largest floating music festival.

“Embarking on our second international voyage beyond Singapore, Asia’s Largest Festival at Sea is setting its course for South Korea. Sailing from Busan to Nagasaki, Japan, and back, jump on board The Costa Serena for an epic 4D3N music festival experience. As is the case on most cruise ships, there were plenty of dining options, from a casual buffet to an expensive steakhouse. But, given the endless festivities and musical performances happening around the clock, there was much less emphasis put on the dining experience than during a traditional cruise. Remains one of the most coveted parties on the planet, an annual meeting ground for one of the scene’s most dedicated communities and a guiding force in the experiential dance music landscape.

An EDM cruise is a unique music festival that combines the excitement of live performances with the luxury of a cruise ship vacation. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of electronic dance music or simply looking for a fun and unique vacation experience, an EDM cruise is definitely worth checking out. With multiple stages, activities, and amenities available, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Over 23,000 lives have been changed forever (including my own) by an oceanic experience unlike anything on Earth.

But just like in the real world, no two families are  the same, so it’s definite that no two cruise experiences will be the same either. Music cruises are simply the most comfortable way to enjoy a festival, because it’s also an incredible vacation! The destinations are always beautiful, the cruise amenities are top-notch, and the sunrises/ sunsets you’ll witness while onboard the ship will leave you speechless.

If you’re a fan of Electronic Dance Music (EDM), chances are you have heard of EDM cruises. These cruises are becoming increasingly popular among music fans who want to combine their love for music with a vacation at sea. Attendees were encouraged to wear all-white outfits, and for the most part, that’s exactly what they did.
